The energy sector has become an important and emerging element of the Scottish economy. It includes a mixture of older and new energy industries including oil, gas, thermal generation, renewable energy, environmental activity and low carbon industries. There are over 250,000 people working in the sector and forecasts suggest there will be demand for up to 40,000 more by 2020.
Lanarkshire is a flourishing energy centre outside of Aberdeen as it offers a large pool of skilled labour and connectivity. Strathclyde Business Park in Bellshill is a real energy hub with companies including SP Energy Networks, FMC Technologies and Electricaire Renewable Energy based there.
Lanarkshire is also noticeably home to a number of working wind farms, with 384 turbines operating on wind farms of four or more turbines in South Lanarkshire alone, generating enough electricity to power 450,000 homes.
