Construction is one of Scotland’s largest business sectors, employing around 172,000 people in a range of different roles from architects to subcontractors and it contributes around 10% of the total Gross Added Value to the Scottish economy.
Lanarkshire’s great location has contributed to the growth and importance of the construction sector and there are over 2,000 companies in the region employing almost 19,000 people. Lanarkshire-based businesses include major industry players such as Morgan Sindall and Laing O’Rourke as well as smaller specialists including Phoenix Specialist Solutions.
Educational institutions and our local councils work closely in partnership to ensure that skilled labourers are readily available for work. New College Lanarkshire runs specialised courses such as HNC Construction, Carpentry and Joinery as well as apprenticeships which have been developed with local companies to ensure supply meets demand.
