Local business and eading window, door and curtain walling manufacturer and installer, CMS Window Systems, has helped Nick Knowles and the BBC DIY SOS team improve the lives of war veterans and residents in Manchester in their biggest ever challenge.

In BBC1’s two-part special, the DIY SOS team took on its most ambitious project to date when it agreed to transform more than 60 houses in Manchester’s New Street and Canada Street. Some of these properties were to be transformed into homes suitable for British war veterans and their families within just over two weeks!

The project, which was visited by Princes William and Harry during the building work, was undertaken to help create an improved, more resident-friendly neighbourhood that everyone – veterans and their local community alike – can feel proud to live in. This included the creation of a Walking With The Wounded advice and therapy centre, plus extensive streetscaping work.

CMS manufactured and installed all the super energy efficient PVCu windows which it donated for the 66 homes. Seven of the properties were significantly changed and converted into three adapted disability friendly homes. The opportunity to help enhance all these homes for a great cause was too good to miss according to CMS managing director Andy Kerr:

“With such an ambitious project for a group in our community that deserves all the support it can get, there was no question that we wouldn’t get involved when the BBC DIY SOS team asked for our help. It’s been a privilege to have played a part in creating these much-needed high quality homes.”

Viewers watched the results of the efforts of the DIY SOS Big Build team and all its volunteers on BBC1 on Wednesday 14th and Wednesday 21st October.
